How To Use “Pretty Permalinks” To Up Your WordPress SEO
One of the simplest things you can do to get better visibility on the search engines with a WordPress website is to change the Permalink structure. First what is a permalink? It is simply the url of the page or post in a WordPress website. Look at the image and you will see example urls that WordPress can generate for your website. By default WordPress uses the Plain structure and assigns the post or page ID as the url. The problem is that the url generated by the “Plain” structure means nothing to a search engine. Search engines need text that makes sense to be able to index a page or post, p=123 doesn’t help identify what the page is about.
By using the “Custom” structure WordPress can generate a more meaningful URL for search engines to index. For instance look at the URL in the address bar of your browser. You should see http://kenkneringer.com/wordpress-tutorials-for-photographers/wordpress-seo-permalinks/. This is the URL generated by the “Custom Structure” shown in the image. This makes a lot more sense to a search engine. They can see that this post is about wordpress tutorials and is specifically about permalinks and SEO. So when people search for “wordpress tutorials” or “wordpress permalinks” the search engines will display this page.
Up your WordPress SEO and change your permalink structure. Go to “Settings” in you WordPress Dashboard, then select “Permalinks”. Click on “Custom Structure”, then type in the text shown in the image. Thats all there is to it!
Just a note that if your webpages won’t display after this change. Simply set the permalink structure back to the way it was before. Some servers don’t have the correct rewrite functions turned on. I will write an explaination on how to change the rewrite function in another article.
