Had a great time at the ABS Bladesmithing School in Texarkana. The School is a two week course that covers all of the basics of forging, finishing, and heat treating a carbon steel blade. It also provides you with the training you need to pass your ABS Journeymans test.
The instructors were great and met some great people! I ended up forging 3 hunters, and 2 large bowie knives during my two weeks. One of the bowie knives were used as my “test” knife. At the end of the class each student has to test one knife by slicing through a 1 1/4″ rope in one slice, then chopping through two 2x4s, then shaving hair off of your arm. After all of that the knife gets put in a vise then bent over to 90 degrees. Yes 90 degrees without breaking!!! It can bend but not break. Mine passed with flying colors!
I had an amazing experience and recommend the school to anyone that is serious about forging high performance knives. The instructors really know their stuff and aren’t afraid to share with the students. After two weeks you should be on your way to making knives out of basic high carbon steel.
